Large painting from the French School of the 19th century, after Jacques-François Courtin (1672-1752), "The Music Lesson", oil on canvas depicting a musical scene composed with elegance and balance.
At the center of the composition, a young woman dressed in a white and blue gown, wearing a red feathered hat, sits playing the guitar. She is surrounded by three young boys: one is lifting a richly ornamented curtain behind her, the second is holding a recorder, and the third is reading a musical score. All three appear attentive and absorbed by the musician's playing.
The setting, composed of a stylized architectural and vegetal backdrop, along with the curtain featuring gold motifs, enhances the scene's gentle theatricality. The whole demonstrates a clear taste for refined genre painting, in the gallant tradition of the 18th century.
This work is strongly inspired by a composition by Jacques-François Courtin, a painter of intimate scenes appreciated at the court of Louis XV for his delicate art of narration and his subjects imbued with grace.
